“For the moment, what we attend to is reality.” William James
In the course of a normal day, our attention is captured countless times. Research has shown that we are more likely to notice things we consider negative even prone to see threats that aren’t actually there. This can cause us to focus too much on upsetting things and also to see neutral events and people as sources of anxiety and unhappiness.
Attention training has been a part and parcel of many contemplative traditions, as a tool for achieving human flourishing. In recent years, modern psychology and neuroscience have been researching these techniques and found some of them to be extraordinarily effective in enhancing well-being and combatting conditions such as anxiety and depression. In fact, it is clear that we can actually take control of our own well-being by understanding and training in attention.
Being skilled in attention gives us the power to transform relationships, take control of our well-being and increase our resilience to adversity. Join us for this interactive workshop where we use modern research and ancient contemplative practices in a comprehensive approach to achieving happiness.
Open to Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike – suitable to all walks of life.
Corey left his career as a jazz pianist in Toronto in 2003 to study Buddhist philosophy, meditation and Tibetan language in India. Inspired by the benefits that meditation had on all aspects of his life, he became involved in the Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB) in 2011 which perfectly facilitates his passion for using ancient wisdom in a thoroughly modern context. For more information on CEB see http://www.cultivatingemotionalbalance.org/?q=content/home
